YSAN Training Pilot Project is a project dedicated to Youth and Youth Serving staffs in order to determine workshops/trainings that best support youth in Hamilton / Halton region.

By evaluating the training that you selected, you examine the relevance of the course in regards to the needs of your organization.

YSAN Pilot Training Project

The final phase of the YSAN Pilot Training Project Phase 3, is focused on piloting selected workshops resulting from the Survey phase of the project. Additional methods of delivery will be tested, including hybrid live and live streaming delivery in the HCA Black Box Theatre to participating YSAN agency sites.

We are looking for volunteers to help evaluate the pilot training courses with the aim of identifying the most relevant for future ongoing training opportunities for YSAN Members.

We are looking for volunteers from each YSAN member organization to help us evaluate the pilot training courses with the aim of finding the most relevant and the best method of delivering. We need help with:

  • Stating your availability and preference

  • Committing to taking the course of your choice

  • Evaluating the course using the guideline

Detailed Description: This certificate provides youth workers with the knowledge and the tools they need to support informed decision-making, and to educate and increase awareness among young people.

Detailed Description: The certificate provides 4 unique learning modules, to be completed at the learner's own pace. After taking this certificate, youth will:

  • Get the facts about mental health and substance use health

  • Dive deeper into cannabis use and mental health

  • Understand the historical legacy and current context

  • Find balance and reduce harm

Course Description: ArtsMatter addresses gaps in arts education within the community and deepens the capacity for community agency workers to engage children and youth in the arts. Meaningful arts activities provide space to tap into inner worlds, express deep emotions and beliefs, and share these with others, so that we can all learn from one another and grow together as healthy, engaged citizens. Emphasizing the connection between arts education and the healthy whole development of children and youth.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Course Description: Face-to-face workshop to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, engaging someone, and connecting them to an intervention resource for further support.

Detailed Description: This program that teaches community members to recognize persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide either directly or indirectly invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to identify and work with these opportunities to help and protect life. Powerful videos illustrate both non-alert and alert responses. Discussion and practice stimulate learning.

RAISE - Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, & Engage Indigenous People

Course Description: Indigenous Cultural Awareness & Competency Training

Detailed Description: There are many ways to be an ally to Indigenous peoples. The term ally means that YOU recognize the privilege that settler cultures have and take for granted. It also implies that you challenge and work towards breaking down those barriers that continue to violate Indigenous communities. Being an ally requires social action, strength, courage, humility, and a support network.

Be More Than a Bystander

Course Description: MentorAction’s “Be More Than A Bystander” training seeks to provide participants with increased awareness and understanding of gender-based and sexual violence, its impacts, and how we can safely intervene when we witness or experience it. The training uses a mixture of group discussions, activities, Powerpoint, and videos to engage participants in reflection on issues of gender-based and sexual violence, consent, gender messaging, and bystander intervention.


Anti-Oppressive Practice in Youth Work

Course Description: Exploring the transformative potential of Anti-Oppressive Practice frameworks for working with youth through lectures on anti-Black racism, Indigenous perspectives, Islamophobia and youth, and supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

Detailed Description: The workshop will explore strategies for supporting youth to question and challenge oppressive systems and structural barriers. This workshop has 9 lessons and 2 hours of video content.

YSAN is working for 12 months to rebuild and recover from impacts of COVID-19 to create training workshops streamed on a new online portal for youth sector staff and volunteers with support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation Resilient Communities Fund.
